Chashaku is a traditional bamboo scoop used for measuring matcha powder and is an essential element of the Japanese tea ceremony. The curved end of the scoop is designed for picking up a small amount of matcha powder and placing it into a bowl (matchawan). After that, the matcha is whisked using a bamboo whisk (chasen) until a smooth texture is achieved. The amount of matcha powder can be adjusted according to personal preferences.
Preparation types:
Usucha (thin tea) – Use 1 chashaku (approximately one level scoop) of matcha powder with 75–100 ml of hot water. This ratio is ideal for creating a rich, frothy layer on top of the drink.
Koicha (thick tea) – Made with 4 to 6 scoops (level chashaku scoops) of matcha powder and about 150 ml of hot water. The result is a thick and sweeter matcha without the characteristic foam. This method requires more effort when mixing and is almost exclusively used in traditional Japanese tea ceremonies.
